2004 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Prof. Aaron J. Ciechanover
Israeli Nobel Laureate to give lecture in Chiang Mai and Bangkok

Prof. Aaron J. Ciechanover, 2004 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry delivered a keynote speech and dialogue entitled "Science and Technology as a Language of Peace" on November 2, 2009 at Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University.

Prof. Aaron Ciechanover, a 2004 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, discovered ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation which helps us to understand at a molecular level how the cell controls a number of central processes by breaking down certain proteins and not others. This knowledge offers an opportunity to develop drugs against many diseases including cervical cancer and cystic fibrosis.

The lecture is part of BRIDGES an ongoing dialogue for peace programme organized by the Vienna-based International Peace Foundation. Prior to his Chiang Mai Lecture, Prof. Ciechanover also had a dialogue with students at New International School of Thailand (NIST) in Bangkok on October 30, 2009.

Inspired by Bangkok’s vivid imagery and local motifs such as building blocks, rows of taxi in heavy traffic, billboards, plastic stools even Thai street food and local delicacies, Segal’s canvases filled with pungent paints reflect the Bangkok vitality, smiles, hope and creativity despite the city’s day-to-day commotion as well as the artist’s quirky sense of humor.

Oct 19, 2009 - The Embassy protested over Hitler billboard sign in Pattaya

The Embassy of Israel took prompt and immediate action to complain against the Hitler billboard sign put up on Pattaya highway to promote a waxwork museum in the tourist town.

The giant billboard showed the picture of Adolf Hitler giving a Nazi salute with a slogan underneath “Hitler is not dead”. It was part of an advertising campaign promoting Louis Tussaud’s Waxwork which is due to open early next month at Ripley’s Museum: Believe It or Not. H.E. Yitzhak Shoham, the ambassador of Israel, sent a complaint letter to the museum operator asking them to remove the hateful sign immediately "The image of Adolf Hitler and the writing underneath are not only offensive to the Holocaust survivors but also to anyone who deplores racist behaviour. They bring a chilling memory of a dictator who systematically murdered in horrific methods 11 million people, men, women and children, during World War II”

Mr. Somporn Naksuetrong, General Manager of Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks, responded to countless complaint both from the Israeli Embassy and the public and apologized for lack of sensitivity: “We did not predict nor thoroughly understand the pain that his picture would cause to others.” Mr. Sompong further confirmed that the creative agency behind the campaign had not intended to cause offense. The museum proceeded to remove the photo of the German leader.
